However, stainless steel fasteners have a tendency to gall, or cold weld, when in contact with a mating stainless steel fastener of similar composition when the proper precautions are not taken. Galling can vary in severity, and may be only a nuisance when minor, but lead to fastener failure in the extreme.
Most coastal regions require stainless steel fasteners to reduce the likelihood of corrosion that leads to rot and failure, according to the company. Stainless steel is able to withstand more inclement weather because it is less brittle than buy carbon steel screw from China.
If a carbon steel screw series is supposed to be turned 13 times after it is inserted but is instead turned only 12 times, an error message flashes and production of the missile or component halts, says Randy Stevenson, a missile-systems executive at Raytheon. Improvising with a defective screw or the wrong size screw isn't an option, he says. "It's either right or it's not right."
The same type of screw or bolt can be made in many different grades of material. For critical high-tensile-strength applications, low-grade bolts may fail, resulting in damage or injury.
